Norman Macgeorge at 'Fairyhills' ('Ballangeich'), 25 Riverside Road, Ivanhoe
Norman Macgeorge standing against a wall of his home ‘Fairyhills’ in Ivanhoe. Norman was born in Adelaide on 8 July 1872, the son of a prosperous draper. He studied art at the Adelaide School of Design and the National Gallery School in Melbourne and then taught drawing at Wesley College, 1902-1906, the Melbourne Teachers’ College and Melbourne Church of England Grammar, 1902-32. He married May Ina Hepburn on 25 Jan 1911, the granddaughter of pioneering pastoralist, Capt. John Hepburn. In the same year, the Macgeorges engaged Harold Desbrowe Annear to design them a house at the junction of the Yarra River and Darebin Creek, Ivanhoe, Melbourne, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Macgeorge painted lyrical landscapes but was also interested in the modern art movements of Europe. He was active in art education and gave regular lectures at the National Gallery and to university extension classes, wrote art reviews for the Melbourne Herald, exhibited his works and, in 1938, helped establish the Contemporary Art Society. He published two works, The Borovansky Ballet in Australia and New Zealand (1946) and The arts in Australia (1948). He died on 2 Sept 1952.
